Roof repair

Fix the roof you have, when that is the answer

A repair is the right call when the damage is small and the roof around it is sound. We find where the water goes in before we say what it costs, and we tell you if a repair would only buy a season.

Common repairs

  • Flashing at chimneys, walls and skylights

  • Cracked vent boots

  • Missing or lifted shingles

  • Rot at the roof edge after an ice dam

  • Gutters pulled loose by ice

What happens when you call

  • You call the office

During office hours Tamar answers. Outside them the call goes to voicemail and we call back first thing in the morning.

  • We ask four questions

Where it drips, how long, how heavy, and whether you can get into the attic safely.

  • We cover what is open

When it is safe to be on the roof, we cover the opening so more water doesn't get in. Emergency work is quoted before it starts.

  • Then the real repair

We find the cause, show you photos and write the repair up, usually on a dry day.

Ice dams

Why the water comes in at the eave

Heat from the house melts snow on the roof. The water runs to the cold overhang and freezes, and the ice behind it backs water up under the shingles.

A barrier at the eaves helps. Insulation and attic ventilation are the lasting fix, so we look at both at every winter-damage visit.

Questions

About repairs

How do I know if I need a new roof or a repair?

We look at the shingles, the flashing, the attic side of the deck and the age of the roof, then show you the photos. If a repair is the honest answer, the estimate says repair.

What is an ice dam, and will a new roof stop one?

Heat from the attic melts snow on the roof, and the water freezes again at the cold edge of the eave. Insulation and ventilation are the lasting fix. An ice-and-water barrier along the eaves helps when water backs up. We look at all three at the estimate.

What do you do if you find rot behind the old siding?

We stop and show you a photo. Rotted sheathing is written up on a change sheet with its price, and nothing is done until both of us have signed it.

Not sure it is a repair?

Send a photo by text. We will tell you what we see before anyone drives out.
